Community Impact
Services to Youth
The Services to Youth Facet conducted an initiative to provide funds to support the distribution of quality books in low-income areas that are considered book deserts, where children have little to no access to books and where the purchase of books is considered a luxury. The goal is to increase access to books in low-income areas to nurture a love of reading for fun in youth. This is vital, as according to the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP), 33% of fourth-grade students in the state of Michigan are proficient readers, and only 5% of fourth grade students within the City of Detroit are proficient readers.
Through the support of the Services to Youth Facet, a total of $2,000 has been raised for children living in low-income areas, for distribution to stock and restock the My Home Library and Little Free Libraries initiatives. This donation translates into 285 books donated through the Greater Wayne County Links Chapter.
